In Spearwood, a suburb
a million miles away from Hollywood,
located in sunny Perth, Western Australia,
was the place of conception for Contempovision Films (CV Films). With very few other filmmakers around at grassroots level,
the founder of CV Films, Kane George Jason, needed to create something from nothing, so he started CV Films in February of
2004, with no more than pure passion and a burning motivation to make films.
The name Contempovision
Films comes in a three section definition. You can use your imagination as to what the word Films stands for. Vision came
from Kane’s passion, and from what he had in his mind before CV Films was a reality. And Contempo was his aim, which
was for the company to produce originally fresh and innovative media in all areas surrounding film and television. It is also an independent distribution company, aiming to show the world what indie filmmakers can do without the
$1000000000 budgets. Distribution ranges from online sources to DVD's.
2004 was the first year
in existence, and seeming CV Films was started by a young person wanting to become a filmmaker; it was a relatively slow year,
with a lot of learning, but a lot less production. After a long period of that and writing various ideas that never amounted
to anything, the first project for CV Films was born; Disembraced. Written and directed by Michael Naidos, starring and produced
by Kane, it was the first project completed, which meant CV Films was finally able to promote a project.
After a fairly slow first
year, 2005 went one gear higher. It saw an extension made to CV Films, a website called Perth Filmmakers Directory, which
would later become a part of the now Contempovision Network. The CV Network also consists of the Contempovision Films website and the CV Forum. These connecting websites are continuing to expand, with all of them having their own pages on other sites such as
Myspace and Youtube. Apart from the website building, three films were produced in this year: “Revenge Is Sweet”,
“Dancing With The Pros” and “My Garden”.
All three films
were produced, written and directed by Kane, which earned Contempovision Films some attention from television, newspapers
and online. All three films were official selections at the Bronxwood Film Festival in 2006. “Dancing With The Pros”
was also chosen to air on USA's
TV program ABC News Now on Friday the 4th August 2006, then on the internet. The presentation was for the celebration
of MTV's 25th anniversary. It would later be added onto the main movie database website, IMDb.com. “My Garden”
was also chosen to air on ABC News Now on Friday the 25th August 2006. This time the presentation was for the Emmy season,
as they asked for original, "award-worthy" performances. It was also an official selection into the Bojah Video Contest the
same year.
After
the attention from these three films, in mid 2006, Leo
Benedictus, a reporter from the Guardian Newspaper in the UK
contacted Kane for an interview. The interview included topics such as how hard it is to be a filmmaker coming from somewhere
so secluded like Western Australia, the use of youtube for the indie filmmaker, future projects and also a quick review for
“Revenge Is Sweet”, where Leo said “a slow 360-degree tracking shot wrings real tension”.
2006
also saw two more short films come to existence, the first being “It’ll Come To You”. This film was also
aired on ABC News for the Emmy “award winning” performances special. The year also saw the return of Yuri Ka,
first seen in “Dancing With The Pros”. This time the new film would be called “Fighting With The Pros”,
in which it won’t be the last time we see the professionalism of Yuri Ka.
The fourth year for Contempovision Films, 2007, has seen its best quality and results yet. In February, the short film
by Kane titled “He’s Not My…” was released. To date, the film has been selected in four film festivals
around the world (Twin Rivers Media Festival 2007, Audience Choice Film Festival 2007, City Of Melville International
Film Festival 2007 and In The Can). It has also been featured on the website LiveVideo where it got over 4000 views in the
first couple of days, and is included in the indietv.tv line-up. In addition to the above, the film features 3 tracks from
the band 8stops7.
Later that year, the short
film “The Shake Off” was unleashed, getting very favourable reviews on the internet. Then came the indie blog
film titled “My Last Blog”, and to round off 2007, the film that is of the highest quality so far, “The
Diary”, which will be first released on the DVD “From Conception To New Born”.
With
countless projects being written and the quality increasing with each passing film, the future of Contempovision Films looks
to get brighter and brighter.
